Saturn stations retrograde on July 26, 2026, at around 20:00 UT, sitting at 14 degrees 45 minutes of Aries. Between the two stations Saturn walks backward through roughly 6 degrees and 49 minutes of Aries. That narrow band is the whole story, and it is the part most “which signs are affected” articles skip.

What “retrograde” actually is

Saturn does not reverse. Nothing in the solar system stops and drives the other way.

A retrograde is a viewing angle. Earth and Saturn both orbit the Sun at different speeds and different distances, and when Earth swings past on the inside track, Saturn appears to slide backward against the stars behind it. Anyone who has overtaken a slower car has watched the same illusion: the other car seems to drift backwards, because you are the one moving faster.

The mechanic is the same one behind Mercury retrograde. What changes is the timescale. Mercury does this three or four times a year for about three weeks. Saturn does it once a year for roughly four and a half months, which makes a Saturn retrograde a season rather than an event.

The shadow period, and why the same degrees come round three times

“Shadow period” sounds ominous and describes something plainly mechanical.

Saturn first reached 7°56’ of Aries moving forward on April 20–21, 2026. It carried on to 14°45’, turned back on July 26, and retraced that same stretch. After it stations direct in December it covers the ground a third time, finally clearing 14°45’ on March 15–16, 2027.

So Saturn crosses the 8-to-15 degree band of Aries three separate times: forward, backward, forward. Astrologers call that a triple pass, and it is the reason these months get read as a review rather than an announcement. A degree Saturn touched in the spring gets touched again in the autumn. The tradition treats the second and third passes as the same subject returning, not a new one arriving.

Is it in Aries or Pisces?

Aries, start to finish. Saturn moves from 14°45’ back to 7°56’ of Aries and does not re-enter Pisces at any point in this cycle. Saturn retrograde in Pisces belongs to earlier years; in 2026 the entire retrograde sits in early Aries.

”Which signs are affected?” — the real answer

This is the most searched question about any retrograde, and the popular answer is wrong in a way worth correcting.

Saturn transits every chart at once. It is one planet in one sky and it does not check your sun sign first. The question is not whether it affects you. It is where.

Saturn spends this retrograde between roughly 8 and 15 degrees of Aries. Whichever house of your chart holds that stretch is the life area the transit moves through. Houses are set by your birth time and place, so two people born the same day in the same city an hour apart can have this land in genuinely different parts of their lives.

Two things follow, and both are checkable rather than mystical:

• If you have a planet or angle between 8 and 15 degrees of Aries, Saturn passes over it during this window, and passes over it three times because of the back-and-forth. Those are the contact points the tradition watches.
• If nothing of yours sits in that band, the transit still moves through one of your houses. It just does so without making an exact contact, generally read as a quieter version of the same season.

Where Saturn moving forward is read as pressure to build, the retrograde is read as the season to audit what you already built. Which commitments still hold. Which structures you maintain out of habit rather than intent. Which responsibility you took on years ago and never re-examined.

A retrograde is not a warning and it is not a stop sign. Read it as a scheduled review of the part of your life the degrees point to, and it becomes something you can use rather than something to brace for.

This is not your Saturn return

Two different things share a planet and get confused constantly.

Saturn retrograde happens every year, lasts about four and a half months, and arrives for everybody at once. A Saturn return happens roughly every 29 and a half years and belongs to you alone: the moment Saturn arrives back at the exact degree it held when you were born.
