What an Astrologer Reads for Career, Love and Marriage

Which parts of your birth chart an astrologer checks for career, love and marriage questions, in plain English, and how to find them in your own chart.

For an astrology reading on career, love or marriage, an astrologer goes to specific parts of your chart: the 10th house, Midheaven, 6th house and Saturn for career; Venus, Mars and the 5th house for love; the 7th house, the Descendant and the transits crossing them for marriage. Every one of those is a fixed point in your birth chart, so you can find the same placements yourself once you know where to look.

A reader charges for knowing which corner of the chart answers which question. This post gives you that map.

How a reader narrows the chart to your question

Your birth chart has three ingredients. Planets are drives: Venus is attraction, Saturn is effort and structure. Signs are the style each drive works in. Houses are the life areas where it plays out, twelve slices of the wheel that run from self and money through home, romance, work, partnership and career. If houses are new to you, the twelve houses explained covers each one.

A question about your career rules out most of the chart before the reader starts. They go straight to the houses and planets tied to that subject, then check what sign each falls in and which other planets touch it.

You need your exact birth time for the house part. The houses rotate with the clock, so a wrong time moves everything. Without one, you can still read the planets by sign.

Career: what an astrologer checks

The 10th house and the Midheaven. The Midheaven, or MC, is the highest point of your chart, the part of the zodiac overhead at your birth. It opens the 10th house, which describes your public role, reputation and the direction you’re known for. The sign on your Midheaven describes the style of that public face. A Capricorn Midheaven is traditionally linked to authority and long careers built step by step; a Gemini Midheaven to work with words, ideas and variety. Planets inside the 10th house add their own flavour.

The 6th house. Where the 10th is your title, the 6th is your workday: routines, colleagues, the tasks you do on a Tuesday afternoon. Someone with a strong 10th house and a crowded 6th often cares as much about how the work feels as what it’s called.

Saturn. Saturn shows where you build through patience and repeated effort, and where progress tends to come slowly before it holds. Its house says which area of life asks that of you. Around age 29 Saturn returns to the place it held at your birth, and many people use their Saturn return to rethink their work.

Your Sun’s house. The Sun is your core drive, so the house it sits in often shows where you want to be seen doing something that matters.

Look in your own chart:

  • Find the sign on your Midheaven and read its traditional qualities.
  • List any planets in your 10th and 6th houses.
  • Note which house holds Saturn.
  • Check whether any planet sits close to the Midheaven itself. Readers give that placement extra weight.

The Midheaven and Ascendant guide goes deeper on the career angle.

Love: what an astrologer checks

Venus. Venus describes what you find attractive, how you show affection and what makes you feel valued. Venus in Taurus leans toward steady comfort and physical warmth; Venus in Aquarius toward friendship first and room to breathe. Its house shows where love most easily turns up in your life.

Mars. Mars is desire and pursuit: how you go after what you want and what sparks you. A reader looks at Venus and Mars together, because one describes what draws you and the other how you act on it.

The 5th house. This is romance, dating, flirtation and pleasure, the light and playful side of love. Planets here, or the sign on its starting point, describe how you date.

The Moon. Your Moon sign shows what you need in order to feel safe and cared for. Plenty of readers start a love question here, because unmet emotional needs explain a lot of pattern repetition.

Look in your own chart:

  • Note the sign and house of Venus, then of Mars.
  • See whether Venus and Mars form an aspect, one of the set angles between planets such as a conjunction, square or trine. Birth chart aspects explains how to read them.
  • Check what sits in your 5th house.
  • Read your Moon sign as a list of needs, not a list of preferences.

Marriage and long-term partnership: what an astrologer checks

The 7th house and the Descendant. The Descendant is the point that was setting on the western horizon at your birth, directly opposite your rising sign. It opens the 7th house, the house of committed one-to-one partnership. Where the 5th house is dating, the 7th is the person you build a shared life with. The Descendant’s sign is traditionally read as the qualities you seek in a partner, often ones you don’t lead with yourself. Someone with Aries rising has a Libra Descendant and may look for balance and diplomacy in a partner.

The ruler of the 7th. Each sign has a ruling planet, so the sign on your Descendant points to another planet in your chart. Where that planet sits adds detail about how partnership shows up for you.

Venus again. For marriage questions a reader looks at Venus as the planet of commitment and shared values, not only attraction.

Relationship timing through transits. A transit is a planet in today’s sky crossing a point in your birth chart. For partnership, readers watch slow planets like Jupiter and Saturn as they cross your Descendant, your Venus or your 7th house ruler. Jupiter’s passage is often read as a season of openness and growth in partnership; Saturn’s as a season of commitment, definition and taking things seriously. These describe periods when relationship themes come to the front, a window for reflection rather than a date on a calendar.

Comparing two charts. When there’s a specific person, an astrologer lays your chart beside theirs and looks at how their planets fall in your houses and where your Venus and Moon meet their placements. This is called synastry.

Look in your own chart:

  • Find the sign on your Descendant.
  • List planets in your 7th house, and find the planet that rules your Descendant’s sign.
  • Check which slow planets are crossing your Descendant or Venus this year.

Reading these placements yourself

Every factor above comes from your birth date, time and place. MysticAlmanac calculates your chart from those three facts and explains each placement in plain English. The Guided Tour walks you through your chart a card at a time, Personal Guidance lists the planets crossing your chart now with the days until each is exact, and Synastry compares your chart with a partner’s.

For a quick start on the question you came with, the free Ask Your Chart quiz has versions for work and love. A few questions, and you get a short personal reading from your birth details.

If you’re weighing up a paid reading, it helps to know what goes into one. Are astrology readings accurate covers what’s exact in a chart and what’s interpretation, and what an astrology reading tells you covers the rest of a typical session.

Career, love and marriage each have their own address in your chart. Once you know the addresses, the next question is yours to bring to it.

Common questions

Which house is career in astrology?

The 10th house, whose starting point is the Midheaven, describes your public role, reputation and direction. Astrologers also read the 6th house for daily work and Saturn for where you build through steady effort.

Which planet shows love in a birth chart?

Venus is the main one: it describes what you find attractive and how you show affection. Mars describes desire and how you pursue what you want, and the 5th house describes romance and dating.

Which house is marriage in astrology?

The 7th house is the house of committed one-to-one partnership, including marriage. Its starting point, the Descendant, sits directly opposite your rising sign.

What does an astrologer look at for marriage timing?

They compare the current sky with your birth chart, looking for slow planets such as Jupiter and Saturn crossing your Descendant, your Venus or the ruler of your 7th house. These periods are read as seasons when partnership themes come forward, not as fixed dates.

Can I read my career chart without a birth time?

Partly. Without a birth time you can still read the signs of Venus, Mars and Saturn, but the houses and the Midheaven need your exact time to be placed.

What is the Descendant in astrology?

The Descendant is the point of the zodiac on the western horizon at your birth, directly opposite your rising sign. It marks the start of the 7th house and is traditionally read as the qualities you seek in a partner.

What is the difference between the 5th and 7th house?

The 5th house covers romance, dating and pleasure. The 7th house covers committed partnership, the person you build a shared life with.
