Your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It shapes how you come across and how you meet anything new. Enter your birth date, time and place to get your rising sign, Sun and Moon, worked out to the degree.
What does your rising sign tell you?
Your rising sign, also called your Ascendant, is the first impression you make and the way you walk into anything new: a room, a job, a relationship. Your Sun sign is who you are at the core. Your rising sign is the door people meet you through, and it often explains why you seem different from what your Sun sign suggests.
It also sets up your whole chart. The rising sign decides which part of life each of your twelve houses covers, so it changes where every planet lands for you. Two people born on the same day share a Sun sign; born a few hours apart, they can have completely different charts.
Why the calculator needs your birth time and place
The sky turns one degree every four minutes, so the sign on the horizon changes on average about every two hours. The date alone can't place it. Your birthplace matters too, because the horizon is local: the same minute in London and in Los Angeles has a different sign rising. The time on your birth certificate is the one to use.
Your Big Three: Sun, Moon and rising
Your Sun sign is your core identity and what you're here to build. Your Moon sign is your emotional life: what you need to feel safe and how you react before you think. Your rising sign is how you come across and how you start things. Together they're the quick version of your chart, and the calculator above gives you all three.
Where the Big Three stop
Anyone can tell you your three signs. What an astrologer charges for is everything around them: which planets pull on your Sun, Moon and rising, where your chart ruler sits, and what the sky is doing to all of it this week. That last part never holds still. The Moon crosses a new part of your chart every two or three days, and the slower planets spend months working on one spot.
The calculator names those pieces for you. MysticAlmanac explains them, from your own chart, and keeps the timing current day by day.
The 12 rising signs
Aries rising: You meet the world head-on
People see you move before they hear you think. Aries rising walks into a room already doing something, and that directness reads as confidence, sometimes as impatience. You start things fast and decide on instinct, and you'd rather apologize later than wait for permission. New situations wake you up instead of making you nervous. The lesson this rising sign keeps teaching is pacing: the first burst is your gift, and the follow-through is where you grow. Your chart ruler is Mars, so where Mars sits in your chart shows where all that drive goes.
Taurus rising: You come across as calm and unhurried
Taurus rising gives off steadiness. People feel they can relax around you, and they often mistake your slowness to react for not caring, when you're taking it in. You approach anything new by testing it with your senses: how it looks, how it feels, whether it will last. Once you commit, you're very hard to move. Comfort, quality and a pleasant setting matter more to you than you might admit. Your chart ruler is Venus, so the house and sign Venus occupies show what you're building toward.
Gemini rising: You lead with curiosity and conversation
Gemini rising reads as quick, bright and talkative. You ask questions, pick up on details, and can talk to almost anyone, which makes first impressions easy for you. New situations are information to collect, so you tend to look younger and lighter than your age. The flip side is restlessness: one track rarely holds you, and people may see you as scattered when you're running several threads at once. Your chart ruler is Mercury, so where Mercury falls shows what your mind keeps circling back to.
Cancer rising: You read the room before you enter it
Cancer rising is protective and tuned in. You sense moods quickly and adjust, so people feel looked after around you, often without knowing why. With strangers you can seem reserved at first; you test whether a place is safe before you show the softer side. Home, family and the people you've chosen sit at the center of how you approach life. Your feelings shape your choices more than logic does, and your instincts are usually right. Your chart ruler is the Moon, so the Moon's sign and house carry extra weight for you.
Leo rising: You light up a room
Leo rising has presence. People notice you, and you tend to carry yourself as if you belong wherever you are. Warmth, generosity and a flair for the visible come naturally, and you approach new things wanting to make them your own. Respect matters a lot to you, and being overlooked stings more than you show. When you lead with the heart instead of the need for approval, people follow you easily. Your chart ruler is the Sun, so your Sun sign and the house it occupies tell you where you're meant to shine.
Virgo rising: You notice what everyone else missed
Virgo rising comes across as composed, capable and a little reserved. You size up a situation by looking at the details, and people come to you when something needs fixing or sorting. You'd rather be useful than be the center of attention. The pressure you put on yourself to get things right can be heavy, and you're often your own harshest critic. Routines, health and doing good work are how you settle your mind. Your chart ruler is Mercury, so Mercury's position shows where your eye for detail does its best work.
Libra rising: You put people at ease
Libra rising is gracious and easy to be around. You read what someone needs from a conversation and give them that, which makes you liked quickly. You approach new things through other people: partnerships, collaborations, a second opinion. Fairness matters deeply to you, and conflict makes you uncomfortable, so you may keep the peace at your own expense. Beauty and balance in your surroundings affect your mood more than most. Your chart ruler is Venus, so the sign and house Venus occupies show what you're seeking in your relationships.
Scorpio rising: You come across as intense and hard to read
Scorpio rising gives off depth. People sense there's more going on behind your eyes than you're saying, and you prefer it that way until trust is earned. You watch first, notice motives, and rarely miss what's being hidden. When you commit, you go all the way, and half-measures bore you. Your life tends to move through real turning points rather than small adjustments. Your traditional chart ruler is Mars, with Pluto as its modern co-ruler, so where Mars sits shows where your intensity gets spent.
Sagittarius rising: You come across as open, upbeat and ready to go
Sagittarius rising reads as friendly, frank and adventurous. You approach new situations with optimism and a sense that something good is around the corner, and that energy draws people in. You need room: travel, ideas, learning, anything that widens the view. Bluntness is your blind spot; you say what you see and sometimes skip the tact. Feeling hemmed in is the fastest way to lose you. Your chart ruler is Jupiter, so where Jupiter falls shows where your luck and your growth tend to show up.
Capricorn rising: You come across as serious and capable
Capricorn rising looks composed, mature and in control, often from a young age. People assume you have it handled, and usually you do. You approach life with a plan, think long term, and earn trust slowly by delivering. Underneath the reserve there's a dry sense of humor that close friends get to see. Many Capricorn risings find life gets easier with age, as the early pressure turns into real authority. Your chart ruler is Saturn, so Saturn's sign and house show where your hardest work pays off.
Aquarius rising: You come across as friendly but independent
Aquarius rising reads as original, open-minded and a little unpredictable. You're easy to talk to and interested in everyone, yet people sense you keep a part of yourself apart. You approach new situations by asking how they could work better, and you follow your own logic even when it goes against the crowd. Friendship, community and causes larger than yourself matter to you. Feeling controlled is what you resist most. Your traditional chart ruler is Saturn, with Uranus as its modern co-ruler, so Saturn's position shows where your vision takes solid form.
Pisces rising: You come across as gentle and hard to pin down
Pisces rising is soft, intuitive and receptive. People open up to you quickly because you seem to understand without being told. You approach new situations by feeling your way in, and you often pick up on the atmosphere before anything is said. That sensitivity makes you compassionate and creative, and it also means you need time alone to recover from other people's moods. Clear boundaries make your life much easier. Your traditional chart ruler is Jupiter, with Neptune as its modern co-ruler, so Jupiter's position shows where your faith and generosity flow.
Questions about your rising sign
What is my rising sign?
Your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born. To find it you need your birth date, birth time and birthplace. Enter them in the calculator above and it works out your rising sign to the degree, along with your Sun and Moon signs.
Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?
Not reliably. The rising sign changes on average about every two hours, so a birth date alone leaves several possibilities. Check your birth certificate, hospital records, or ask a parent. Even a rough time narrows it down, unless your Ascendant falls right at the edge of a sign.
Is your rising sign more important than your sun sign?
Neither one outranks the other. Your Sun sign describes your core identity and purpose. Your rising sign describes how you come across and how you approach anything new. Many people recognize themselves more in their rising sign at first, because it is the side others meet first.
Can your rising sign change?
No. Your rising sign is fixed by the moment and place you were born. If two websites give you different rising signs, the cause is almost always a different birth time or a birthplace entered wrongly, especially when your Ascendant sits within a degree or two of the next sign.
What is the Big Three in astrology?
The Big Three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. The Sun is your core self, the Moon is your emotional life and what you need to feel safe, and the rising sign is how you meet the world. Together they give a fast, fairly accurate sketch of your chart.
How accurate is this rising sign calculator?
The planets and the Ascendant are calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris, accurate to a small fraction of a degree, with houses in the Placidus system. The result can only be as accurate as the birth time you enter, which is why the calculator flags it when your Ascendant sits at the edge of a sign.
